1864 letter from William Shakespeare Hall

This week, Dr Kate talks about a very early letter from the Pilbara, written just as this area was opening up to the pastoral industry. The letter is digitised and can be viewed online through the State Library catalogue.

This letter was written by William Shakespeare Hall to John Wellard. William was establishing Andover station, a pastoral station south of Cossack, on behalf of John Wellard. The letter provides information on what life was like for people attempting to set up stations in the Pilbara at this time.

The letter has been digitised and is available online through the State Library catalogue. To access the PDF, click on the green ‘Download’ button, then ‘I Agree and Download’.

Recorded live on ABC Radio Perth on 12 May 2020.
