Sochoeurn The Monk

Inspired by the social media phenomenon Humans of New York, we have been uncovering the Library's greatest treasure, the people who breathe life into its spaces - the 'Humans of the Library'.

Meet Sochoeurn -The Monk.

"I am studying to achieve a Certificate in English at TAFE. I come to the Library in the afternoons to read, do assignments and homework. I am also preparing for my Australian citizenship.

In the mornings I work at my temple. I feel most happy, calm and at peace when I practice meditation and mindfulness each day.

I was invited to Perth by the Cambodian community in 2012. I am good at talking to people about Buddha teachings but sometimes I feel afraid because my English is not good and it takes time for me to feel comfortable with a new person. Other fears? Snakes! Corruption in my country.

My grandmother is the person who has most influenced me. I went to live with her when I was six years old so I could attend school in the city. She taught me to be a good person, to follow Buddha and encouraged me to come to Australia."
