Trish Owen & Natalie Bogoias Death on the Streets

Natalie is a street nurse with an organisation called Homeless Healthcare. Patricia (Trish) describes herself as a lived experience consultant, involved in advocacy for housing, alcohol and other drugs and mental health issues. They talk about the difficulty involved in finding housing for those with mental health or alcohol and drug issues, the trauma the majority of homeless people have experienced, and the deterioration in health and multi-morbidity that occurs when a person lives on the street.

Natalie discusses the deaths of street present people, including four socially isolated Aboriginal women that she had worked with for months and years. She talks about the role of the guardian or advocate who will try to find family members when a homeless person passes away, and the sad truth that more often in our society it’s a death that goes unmarked.
