Don't judge a book by its cover QR code project

The State Library is wrapped in nearly 400 QR codes, each linking to a classic eBook you can download for free.

This virtual library is 180 metres in length and is available 24/7 until the beginning of August, plus there are no limits on the number of books you can download. Read one or read them all - now is the chance to discover all those books that you promised yourself you should read!

The book titles include classics such as Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Banjo Paterson's Old Bush Songs, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and many many more.

The project is just a small step in the direction of making reading more accessible. It also supports the Premier's Reading Challenge a great initiative to get West Australian young people reading again. Literacy plays a significant role in reducing inequities that favour one group over another in access to education, property, employment, health care, legal and civic participation.

The project has been called 'Don't Judge a Book by its Cover', a reference to the one dimensional perception that some may hold of the State Library itself. The State Library is of course a home for books but it also houses:

  • 44,000 maps
  • 1.5 million photographs
  • 2967 musical scores
  • 18,000 hours of oral histories
  • 24,000 motion pictures
  • 35 kms of shelving
  • 5700 CDS

The aim of this project is to get more people reading and more people through the Library's doors to discover what's inside.
