There’s no better time to delve into researching your family history. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced researcher, the State Library has a wealth of and resources to help you on your research journey.

Do you have a family history research query or need help getting started?
Ask a Librarian online or in person by visiting the J.S. Battye Library of West Australian History on Level 3 of the State Library.
Family History WA provide invaluable assistance to family history researchers. Come and see a volunteer on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10am – 1pm on Level 3 of the State Library.

The State Library is the perfect place to start exploring your family history. From guides to getting started to online resources, we can help you research your family’s past.
- Getting started is a great place to start exploring the information and resources available on the State Library website.
- Dead Reckoning is your handbook to family history research in Western Australia
- Family History eResources provide access to digitised collections and databases from around the world. Ancestry Library Edition and Find My Past can only be within the State Library building, while others can be explored from home. Become a library member for free to access these resources.
Storylines
Storylines is a digital archive for Aboriginal people who wish to access the State Library's extensive heritage collections, and a safe place to store records of people, place, and history. It holds more than 12,000 photographs from around the state, as well as a number of oral histories, family trees, historical documents and other media files.
Storylines can be viewed online from anywhere in Western Australia, or through dedicated computers in the Cultural Hub on Level 3 at the State Library.
