Step into the magical world of picture books with special behind-the-scenes tours of the State Library of Western Australia’s children’s book art collection, held in celebration of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week (16–23 August).

Discover what gives picture books their enduring charm and why illustration is one of the most powerful and accessible forms of storytelling. These guided tours offer a rare opportunity to view original artworks, roughs and storyboards from the State Library’s remarkable Peter Williams Collection of Australian picture book illustrations. From early sketches to final pages, see how illustrators bring stories to life.

The Peter Williams Collection began with a generous donation of 107 items from children’s literature expert Dr Peter Williams and continues to grow, celebrating the vital role of picture books in sparking imagination, building language, and nurturing a lifelong love of reading. The collection features works by much-loved creators such as Kerry Argent, Ron Brooks, Wendy Binks, Bob Graham, Leigh Hobbs, Ambelin Kwaymullina, Alison Lester, Shaun Tan and many more.

Whether you're an educator, a parent, a creative, or simply someone who loves beautiful books, these tours offer an inspiring glimpse into the heart of Australian storytelling.
