The State Library and West Australian Music (WAM) partnered to present the Corridors of Blissterday initiative, providing the opportunity for a WA sound practitioner to develop a contemporary work referencing and incorporating the State Library of Western Australia Heritage Collections.
The winning submission, selected by a panel of industry judges, is by Sze Tsang, who releases music under the name Samarobryn. Sze is a current PhD candidate at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and has played in numerous Perth bands over a number of years.
Sze's project will transform the State Library's map collections into interactive virtual instruments using the IanniX software application. Visual information contained on the maps will be translated into triggers for sounds, as well as controls for how those sounds are played. Field recordings from the places on the maps will also be worked into the resulting compositions.
These works were exhibited at the State Library and launched through a live performance as part of WAM's WA Music Month celebrations in November 2022.
