2022 WA Heritage Awards Fremantle Then & Now Wins Interpretation Project

Over the past 30 years, the Western Australian Heritage Awards have celebrated the achievements of professionals, volunteer groups, individuals and organisations who have significantly contributed to WA heritage through conservation, adaptive reuse, promotion, tourism, and interpretation. The awards were held on Friday, 25 November 2022, at the WA Museum Boola Bardip.

Fremantle Then & Now: Historical Panoramas exhibition won the “Interpretation Project” category. The immersive and interactive exhibition explores the changing face of Fremantle from the 1800s to the present day. The twenty panoramic images celebrating the changes and legacy of Fremantle have been digitally layered through a collaboration between the Curtin HIVE and the State Library of Western Australia. The Hon. David Templeman presented the award certificate to Alec Coles (WA Museum CEO) and Associate Professor Andrew Woods (Curtin HIVE), who received the award on behalf of the entire team.

The historic panoramic images from the State Library of Western Australia’s collections were restored and digitised in 2015 with generous support from the Friends of Battye Library through the Sholl Bequest. The digitised images were reimagined as a virtual tour by students and staff from Curtin University HIVE (Hub for Immersive Visualiation) facility in collaboration with staff from the State Library of Western Australia.

Fremantle Then & Now: Historical Panoramas is on at the Fremantle Maritime Museum until 19 February 2023.

You can take a virtual tour of Historical Panoramas website.

Fremantle Then & Now is held in partnership with Curtin HIVE, the City of Fremantle, and the State Library of Western Australia.
