Forestry - Old Growth continued

Although logging began soon after the Swan River Colony was established in 1829, it was not until the 1870s that exports of timber began to exceed local consumption. The expansion of railway systems during the 1880s in Western Australian and the eastern colonies, especially South Australia, saw more and more hardwoods being cut for railway sleepers. These remained a staple of the timber industry for many years to come, as the following images from the 1920s reveal.
