More Land Clearing

As the twentieth century progressed farmers began using tractors to drag scrub rollers.

In spite of this increased use of mechanical processes farmers in the early part of the century were still required to work by hand and burn off the stripped trees and scrub. Favourable economic condiditons encouraged the clearing of land for cultivation - a trend which continued with the influx of ex-servicemen to potential farming regions under various land settlement schemes, such as the Group Settlement Scheme in the 1920s.

This process can be followed from clearing to harvest in this series of photographs taken at Bindi Bindi, Western Australia, in 1921.
Soon after clearing farmers at Bindi Bindi were able to plant a crop and obtain a harvest.
