In 1874, John Forrest set out with a party of five men, including Aboriginal trackers Tommy Windich and Tommy Pierre, on a trek from Geraldton to Adelaide to explore the ‘real nature’ of the Western Australian interior.

In 2018, the State Library of Western Australia, in partnership with the Minderoo Foundation, is embarking on a new journey of discovery. Follow the project team as it engages with communities in Yamaji country, the Western Desert and Ngaanyatjarra Lands to explore First Peoples connections to the lands travelled by Forrest and his team in 1874.

The project will reinterpret the historic trek from different creative and community perspectives through artworks, regional displays, public programs, educational resources and a major exhibition at the State Library in 2019.
