Featuring three of Western Australia’s most celebrated jazz instrumentalists, the Gabriel Fatin Trio operate broadly within the sphere of jazz, but bring an open format to their playing. Based around the piano playing of Gabriel Fatin, who was WAAPA’s best recitalist of 2013, the trio draw on such eclectic influences as Peruvian percussion, Claude Debussy’s impressionist harmonies and gospel melodies, alongside more traditional jazz influences as John Coltrane and Chick Corea.

Featuring emerging percussion powerhouse Alex Reid on drums and WAAPA’s co-ordinator of jazz studies Jamie Oehlers on saxophone, the Gabriel Fatin Trio achieve a lightness and sparseness without the grounding of a bass player, which allows them to play freely around the various musical styles that inform Fatin’s approach to composition.
