Brides

Women married to avoid the low status of spinsterhood, to acquire financial security, to acquire independence from parents and to have children. Society saw marriage as her sacred duty and the bride enacts a ritual to signify her acceptance of this role.  The early images show great purpose, these fade into sentimentality by the 1920s and finally into practicality by the 1940s.
