Borrowing Items

Borrowing and Renewing

Membership is available free of charge to all residents of Western Australia.  To join the Library, complete the online membership form or apply in person at any enquiry desk in the building.

You will need to provide proof of identity and a current residential address. This needs to be an item showing your name and residential address from an official institution. For example, Western Australian driver's licence.

Members under the age of 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian.  Download and print the Parent/Guardian Consent Form (PDF, 119KB)

Once you have provided proof you are a WA resident, you will be issued with a membership card.

Your membership card is required to enable borrowing and renewal of items.

Up to eight items may be borrowed at a time. Books can be borrowed for four weeks. Orchestral sets and Playsets can be borrowed for three months.

Not all library items are available for loan. Rare, valuable or heavy demand items, as well as all materials from the J S Battye Library of West Australian History are available only within the library building during opening hours.

Loans can be renewed and should be done so to avoid replacement costs and administration fees being charged. Items can't be renewed if another reader is waiting to borrow the item or the item has previously been renewed. Items can only be renewed once.

Renew loans online by logging into your membership card or contact the State Library at circ@slwa.wa.gov.au.

Check Out and Return

The circulation desk is located on the ground floor. Library staff will assist with the checkout and return process. Returns are made to reception on the ground floor.

Take care of the items you borrow as a replacement cost will be charged for items that are not returned or that are damaged beyond repair.

An administration fee will also be charged for each invoice sent.

Home Delivery Service

A home delivery service is offered - delivery only - for $10.00 per item. Express Post is used to deliver items. Please note that return of loans via post or in person to the State Library is at your expense. Returns should not be made via local libraries.

To request home delivery, choose "home delivery" as the Pick-up Location and you will be sent a link to BPoint for payment by credit card.
