Plan An Excursion

Excursions to the State Library are an engaging and educationally rewarding experience for students and teachers are welcome to bring students into the Library for self-guided visits.  Bookings are recommended for all school/class visits. The Library recognises that class excursions can take a lot of work to organise.  The Education Officers at the State Library can make it easier for teachers by providing as much information and supporting documentation as possible for planning your visit. The following provides additional information to help with your visit.

Booking, Cost and Times

Contact the State Library on (08) 9427 3202 to book a class visit. Even if undertaking a self-guided visit where a guide or other educational service is not required, booking will avoid clashes with other groups and that the Library has adequate resources available. Booking also allows the Library Education Officers to provide further guidance about other educational experiences in and around the State Library that may enrich the visit.

Suggested session duration is approximately 45 minutes to  one hour. Session times for facilitated workshops are recommended as  9.45 am, 11.00 am and 12.30 pm

All school program sessions, events and exhibitions at the Library are free.

Group Size and Accessibility

The maximum number of students per workshop is 35.  State Library staff assisting with school groups will present activities but are not responsible for the supervision of students. Duty of care of students and management of their behaviour is the responsibility of the attending teacher. It is a requirement to provide a supervisory team for excursions. The Library recommends one adult per six students for Foundation to Year 3 classes and one adult per 15 students for Year 4 to Year 12 classes.

Please advise the Library Education Officer if you have students with special needs. The venue is suitable for wheelchairs, with lift access to all floors and disabled toilets and drink fountains.

Emergency Procedures and Public Liability

The State Library is a government owned facility. It complies with Riskcover insurance and Public Liability insurance requirements for the excursion management policy. Evacuation Procedures Documents are available in PDF or by phoning (08) 9427 3202.

On the Day of the Visit

Teachers are asked to assemble in or near The Nook exhibition area to the side of the State Library entrance fro the Perth Cultural  Centre. An adult should register your arrival at the Welcome Desk. A Library Education Officer will meet your group and lead you to the Education Space for your workshop. Teaching staff are required to accompany the students at all times whilst in the Library. It is the teacher’s responsibility to actively monitor student behaviour and intervene when necessary.

Try to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your booking time to ensure your group has had a drink, been to the toilet and ready to start the workshop at the time on your booking confirmation. Please be punctual, late arrivals will result in a shortened tour experience.

State Library staff reserve the right to immediately cancel a class if student behaviour is unruly, disruptive to other library patrons or putting staff members at risk.

Bag Storage

There is limited space for bag storage and the Library encourages schools to only bring essential items on excursions. If it is necessary to bring bags, the can be stored in the secure Education Space for the duration of the workshop or tour.  The Library would prefer that any food or drink items be organised into large communal bags or baskets for break periods.

Toilets

Toilet facilities (including disabled) and drink fountains are located at the Francis street end of the foyer. There are drink fountains and toilets on all floors of the Library, except the Mezzanine Level.  Try to arrive at the State Library at least 15 minutes prior to your confirmed booking time to ensure all students have been to the toilet, had a drink and are organised for their workshop or tour.

Lunch

Lunch baskets can be stored at the Library, please arrange this prior to your visit (08) 9427 3202.

Space is available for students on either the grassed area or the paved area (under cover) directly outside the Library (James Street side). Please note that the Library cannot provide lunch space for students within the building. Food and drink are not permitted in the Library and talking on mobile phones is discouraged.

Photocopiers and Printers

Photocopiers are located on all floors of the building. Students will need a card with a magnetic strip in order to photocopy. A list of fees and charges for copying and other services is available. Ensure students come to the Library with enough money (preferably change) for photocopying and printing if this is required.
