State Library invites you to step beyond its bookshelves in back of house tours
On Sunday 11 November 2018, the State Library of Western Australia will offer behind-the-scenes tours as part of Open House Perth.
Fittingly named Beyond the Bookshelves, these guided tours will take you deep into the bowels of the unassuming brutalist State Library building in the Perth Culture Centre.
There you will explore some of the Library’s quirky storage spaces, learn about conservation, restoration and preservation processes and discover how unique items are stored and cared for.
Winding through stacks of archival material – from rare books to maps, paintings and film reels - the tours will reveal some of the hidden treasures of the State Library’s heritage Collection.
Margaret Allen, CEO and State Librarian, welcomes everyone to share the experience.
“It’s wonderful to be able to open our doors and expose the fascinating and unique work the State Library does to collect, preserve and make accessible our Western Australian history.
“Through these tours people will see that libraries are so much more than simple book depositories - they are custodians of history, hubs of knowledge and idea factories. Libraries offer many services such as free to download movies, eBooks and eAudiobooks for everyone, every day.”
Beyond the Bookshelves tours will be held on Sunday 11 November at 10.30am and at 2.00pm. Register for a tour at slwa.eventbrite.com. Learn more about Open house Perth at openhouseperth.net
