Gaimard's Journal

Paul Gaimard (1793-1858) was assistant surgeon aboard the French vessel Uranie which, under the command of Louis de Freycinet, visited Shark Bay on the Western Australian coast in 1818. Gaimard's journal, pictured below, is one of the most significant and treasured items in the collection of the State Library of Western Australia.

Further below is an English translation of pages 269 to 291, which deal with the expedition's time at Shark Bay. These pages were transcribed by Elizabeth Gralton and translated by Paul Gibbard in 2014.
