The State Library of Western Australia education programs cater for all students from Kindergarten to Year 7. Our programs complement the curriculum framework and may be adapted to suit the needs of your students. All education programs at the State Library are free of charge.

Primary Education Programs

More Than Just Books (Yrs K to 7)

This one hour interactive experience introduces students to the Library’s unexpected resources including; maps, microfilm, digital resources, and some of our many hidden treasures.

A great introductory program for students who are unfamiliar with the resources available.

SEaK: Search Engage and Know (Yrs 6 and 7)

Take the challenge and learn to search like a librarian. This hands-on session will assist students to improve their electronic searching skills to find the best resource for the right information. Students are introduced to some tricks of the information finding trade including; truncation, phrase searching, exclusion and critical web-site analysis skills.

Special Events

NAIDOC 2008 Rhythm Fix workshop Boy on Ziptales

The State Library is regularly involved in a number of special events for school groups, including; National Simultaneous Story Time, Book Week and Make Your Own Story Book Exhibition, variety of author and illustrator events, NAIDOC week, National Literacy and Numeracy week and Indigenous Literacy Day.

Self Guided Visits

School groups are welcome to visit the library for self guided experiences. We do request you let us know you are coming, that way we can ensure there are resources available for you to use.

We strongly encourage all school groups to contact the library prior to their visit, even if they do not require a guide or other educational services.

An extensive collection of animated, talking picture books and novels with options to read-along with or without sound. Suitable for students in Kindergarten to year 7. Great resource for reluctant readers.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Online
Much more than an encyclopaedia! Includes photographs, maps, animations, audio clip, videos and links to student friendly websites.Three versions are available:  Junior (yrs 1 to 3); Student (yrs 4 to 5); Standard (yrs 6 to 7).

Encourage students to join their public library for free access to these resources from home or their public library.

Please be aware that access to online databases from other than the library or home, that is, schools and universities, is not permitted under the licence agreements held between the Library and Vendors.
