Facilities and equipment





Full Internet access is available on all non CDROM and non library catalogue computers throughout the library. A booking system is in place to ensure that all our clients have equal access to computers throughout the Library. In additon to the Internet, our Internet computers also provide access to our library catalgue and electronic databases.


The State Library has computers on every floor that are available for you to use. 

Library catalogue computers

Computers dedicated to accessing our Library catalogue are available for your use on the first, second and third floors and do not require a booking.

Fast access computers

Fast access computers are available in the ground floor Discovery Lounge for 20 minute periods and do not require a booking.  Please wait in the designated area for the next free computer.

Book a computer

To access a computer for longer periods you must register with the State Library and make a booking for up to an hour at a time. You can make a booking for today or tomorrow.

If you plan to use the Library’s services over a long period please register to receive your membership number and library card.  If you are a short term visitor you can register as a guest. Computer bookings can only be made after you have registered on our computer booking system. Special needs clients

The State Library of Western Australia is committed to ensuring that people with disabilities, their families and carers have the same opportunities, rights and responsibilities as others to access equitable library and information services.

Music Studio

Music Studio

A rehearsal and practice room for solo musicians and small acoustic ensembles is available for hire. It is equipped with a Yamaha piano, music stand and stool. Clients are welcome to try out sheet music from the Library's extensive collection.

The Music Studio is available from 9am to 7:45pm Monday to Thursday; 9am to 5:15pm Friday; and 10am to 5:15pm Saturday and Sunday. Please contact the second floor service desk for further information on this facility on Tel: 08 9427 3242.

Exhibition Space

Situated on the ground floor, the library's exhibition space hosts a year round program of exhibitions and events to promote our collections and services.

Nursing Mothers Room

A room for nursing mothers is located on the ground floor of the State Library Building. Please speak to our Welcome desk staff on the ground floor if you need to access this room.


Aroma Cafe is located on the ground floor of the State Library Building where light refreshments are provided. Catering services are available for public events in the State Library Theatre and functions in the building by arrangement. Please telephone us on: 08 9427 3102 for further details. The State Library Building is situated in Northbridge which has a wide range of restaurants.


Photocopiers & Printers

Photocopiers and printers are available on the ground, first, second, and third levels of the State Library. Prints and copies are available in both colour and black & white in A4 and A3 sizes. Printing is available from all State Library computers. You cannot print from your own laptop or device.

You do not need to be a member of the State Library to access our printing and photocopying services.

Payment for printing and photocopying is made via a rechargeable print and copy card.  If you have registered as a member of the State Library, your print and copy card will be your State Library membership card. If you are not a member of the State Library, you may access a guest print and copy card to which you may add credit to cover the cost of your print and copy jobs.

Credit may be added to your State Library membership card, or guest card, via one of our print and copy credit kiosks. Our print and copy credit kiosks accept EFTPOS, cash, and coins.

CDROM workstations

Five workstations are available on the third level of the Library where you may access a range of genealogical CDROM databases.

Microform readers and reader-printers

The Library is equipped with analogue micrographic readers and reader-printers. The Library also provides digital microform scanners that are capable of high resolution scanning of microfiche and microfilm only. The scanners allow you to scan microform images, print and save them to CDs, USB devices and SD cards. The analogue micrographic readers and scanners are located on the first and third floors of the Library. The analogue reader-printers are located on the third floor of the library. 16mm film player

The Library provides a 16mm film player on which you can view State Library, State Film Archives and National Film and Sound Archive films. The film player is located on the third floor of the Library. 

LCD TVs, VHS and DVD equipment

Widescreen LCD televisions, video and DVD players are located on the first  floor of the Library. You may view State Library and National Film and Sound Archive videos and DVDs on this equipment.

Headphones for purchase

Headphones are available at the Library bookshop. The headphones may be used to listen to sound files on all of our Internet computers.


Lockers are only provided for Library users.

The locker facilities are located on the Ground Floor of the State Library near the Welcome Desk.

These lockers are for the safe storage of our clients' bags and valuables.

Lockers are available in 4 sizes: 

45cm x 33.5cm x 26.5cm
45cm x 43cm x 26.5cm
45cm x 57cm x 26.5cm
45cm x 87cm x 26.5cm

Be aware that only a limited number of each size locker is available.

To operate the lockers you will need a 4 digit PIN code of your choice. Anything left in the lockers after closing time will be removed by Library staff and a $10 fee (per locker, per night) applied when retrieving items.

Ground Floor:

Clients who use the Ground Floor Discovery Lounge do not need to use the locker facilities. Clients using this area are permitted to have their bags with them.

Upper Floors of the Library:

Bags greater than 48cm x 38cm are not permitted on the upper floors of the Library where the collections are housed. There is a sign depicting this size close to the security gates on the ground floor.

Over sized or larger items:

Items that exceed our size limit may not be taken into the upper floors of the library.

There are no storage facilities available for such items. Some may fit into our lockers. You are not able to leave these larger items at the Welcome Desk.

Please note: clients are responsible for their own belongings and bags whilst using any areas of the library.

Public telephone

A public telephone is available on the ground floor of the State Library Building.

Public toilets

Male and female toilets are available on the ground, first, second and third floors of the library. A separate unisex disabled toilet is available on the ground floor.
