Borrowing Items

Most of the items in the State Library are available for you to borrow via interlibrary loans at your local public library. To initiate an interlibrary loan, please make a note of the item details from the State Library catalogue and give the details to your local librarian. Your local librarian will request the items, which will be sent to your local library for you to borrow. Your local public library will return the item to the State Library once you have returned the item to them.

The following items are not available for loan but may be accessed within the State Library: 

  • Private Archives 
  • All rare books, serials and maps 
  • Newspapers 
  • Ephemera 
  • Pictorial items 
  • Music CDs
  • Research Collection of Children’s Literature (RCCL) 
  • State Library ships’ photograph and postcard collection 
  • Encyclopedias 
  • Dictionaries

Borrowing Films, Videos and DVDs

Videos, DVDs and film reels may be borrowed from the Library's collections by organisational members of the Library and by members of the public.

Borrowing Music and Scripts

Western Australian individuals and organisations may borrow music scores, play scripts and music audio cassettes directly from the State Library collections.
