Western Australia's No. 1 Rabbit-Proof Fence, was a wire mesh fence running from Starvation Boat Harbour, near Esperance, north 1834 km to Eighty Mile Beach, near Port Hedland. It was completed in 1907. The fence was constructed to keep out the imported rabbits which had reached plague proportions in eastern Australia. C.H. Menzel was a rabbit trapper and boundary rider from 1925 to 1928 and 1931 to 1933. This collection of material mainly relates to the rabbit problem and the Rabbit Proof Fence. It includes C.H. Menzel's biography, booklets, contracts, correspondence (including Dept. of Agriculture correspondence), draft manuscript on animal pests, extracts, histories of Burracoppin in the 1930s, Narndee Station, Snowy Rowles, information sheets, list of Rabbit Branch employees from 1904, newspaper cuttings, notes of his experiences working on the fence, photographs, poem, poster, reminiscences, report of Secretary of the Rabbit Department (1902), writings.
