  1. Pay for use site. Approved pension applications of widows and other dependents of Civil War veterans who served between 1861 and 1910. Ultimately, the Civil War Widows' Pensions project will digitise, index, and make available approximately 1,280,000 Civil War and later widows’ files. Many of the widows and families are from Europe - some still living there.

Please note that the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System contains just an index of the men who served in the Civil War with only rudimentary information from the service records (including name, rank and unit in which they served). The full service records are housed at the National Archives and Records Administration. All records in this database have been transcribed from the National Archives' original documents; alternate names and/or misspellings are recorded as initially documented
